Inkwell Portfolio

This is a collection of just a few of the projects I worked on in my three years at Inkwell Creative. We primarily built custom Flash based front-end WordPress back-end applications, so please view in a Flash enabled environment.

My general theory behind the choice of technologies…

was an attempt at utilizing the power of Flash to take the elegance of print design and create full screen-application style web sites, while focusing on SEO and usability.

The Flash interface was substituted for the HTML WordPress template when loaded on Flash deficient devices, including Google spiders, using SWFObject. SWFAddress was used to run all user interactions through the url, using it as a command-line for the application. This way the application states could be thoroughly indexed by Google and all user interaction tracked in Analytics.

The downside of this technique was the HTML WordPress template was never given enough resources, and mobile devices were usually left underdeveloped.

My cello and I had the opportunity to compose and perform the soundtrack for SKEETERS, winner of Portland’s Three Minute Picture Show for 2011. A Hitchcockian tale of murder, betrayal, and killer mosquitoes.

I was born in 1973.

I grew up in the Michigan suburbs.

I started playing guitar in high school, a little piano when I was younger.

I was an eagle scout.

Went to multiple colleges and changed my major often. Graduated with bachelors degrees in Psychology and in Philosophy.

I played with computers a lot.

I’ve been a carpenter since I could drive a car. When I wasn’t in school I did rough and finish carpentry, eventually for really rich people, windy staircases and coffer ceilings.

I recorded a few albums of acoustic guitar singing drums bass stuff and coffee shops and bars around Michigan.

I broke my femur on a skate board without health insurance. I became a programmer full time and months later in 2006 I moved to Portland, OR. I began freelance in this city, with the old Paley’s Place flash site and some other consistent PHP application work I paid the bills.

Was hired as a flash developer for a company called Virso, worked there almost a year before the company flopped due to bad business.

I moved to a company called Inkwell Creative as a Flash developer. I worked there for three years going from brochure flash boxes to full screen database application Flash front-ends driven by WordPress and a bunch of other stuff.

A year after I started at inkwell, I got a cello.

In the beginning of 2011 I left Inkwell, and currently am freelancing again.

I’m working with a diverse set of languages, and playing lots of Bach on cello.

Even Construction

Even construction was one of the opportunities I had at Inkwell to begin the design process myself, and not just fill in the designers work as I build out the site. I was going for a magazine style layout, focusing on the wonderful photography, all content loaded from WordPress.

Malarkey Shingle Presentation

I took the basic design elements of the website and created an interactive presentation with content from old power point files. This is used as part of a trade show booth presentation of Malarkey Roofing Company (see below).

Independent Electrical Contractors of Oregon

One of the most complex Flash/WP sites I did for Inkwell. Lots of admin customization and custom database components, pdf creation, sending and tracking. The static design was originally done by an intern designer at the time. At the end of the six month build process the people I was working with at IEC brought me a case of beer as a thank-you. They are good people.

Malarkey

Inkwell’s highest traffic web client. Another WordPress Flash site with lots of application components including an walk through ordering form for their sample requests, a very extensive line of products. This site was built before mobile browsers were important to anyone. The WordPress template in mobile safari and the Flash scaling on the android are under developed (last I checked).

I always wanted to animate plants, I wanted to teach these plants to dance but didn’t have the time. These just wake up and sleep, some are nocturnal. I would love to do more of this, expand on the idea.

Inkwell Creative

As their internet department for almost three years, I built many systems for many clients and worked with a variety of designers. This would occupy the majority of my portfolio if I were allowed to show it. Let’s just say for three years I dived into object oriented programming and application style development, UX and UI design, dissected WordPress and lots of other non-sense. Lots of user forms and FDF mailing applications, interactive presentations, I even learned a great deal about branding, print, marketing, corporate life and darts.

I left my full time position with Inkwell in the beginning of 2011, and still contract work from them from home.
